The Real Cost of Unplanned Dinners

Most families spend more time deciding what to eat than actually cooking. The mental load of meal planning falls on one person — and it never ends.

😤

The 6pm Panic

It is 6pm. Everyone is hungry. No one knows what to cook. You end up ordering takeout again — and feeling guilty about it.

🛒

The Wasted Groceries

You buy ingredients for a meal you planned, then change your mind. Half the fridge goes to waste every week. The USDA estimates the average family of four wastes $1,500 in food every year.

😒

The Picky Eaters

One kid hates mushrooms, the other loves them. Finding one meal everyone agrees on feels impossible — and the complaints at the table are exhausting.

How FamilyPlate Works

Three steps. Less than five minutes. A full week of meals your family actually wants to eat.

Step 1

AI Builds Your Weekly Plan

Tell FamilyPlate about your household — dietary restrictions, cuisine preferences, how many people you are feeding, and which meal types you want (breakfast, lunch, dinner, or all three). The AI generates a complete weekly plan in seconds.

The plan respects every constraint simultaneously. If one family member is gluten-free and another is vegetarian, every meal satisfies both. The AI also avoids repeating the same meal more often than once every four weeks, so the plan stays fresh week after week.

Not happy with a meal? Swap it instantly — the AI replaces it with a fresh alternative that still fits your restrictions.

Step 2

Everyone Gets a Vote

Share a single link with your family. No app download. No account required. Each person just enters their name and starts voting — thumbs up, neutral, or thumbs down on every meal.

The voting experience is designed for the whole family, including kids. Each meal card shows the dish name, a description, and the meal type (Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner) with its day of the week. Voting takes less than two minutes for a full week of meals.

After voting, family members see an "All Done!" confirmation and can review and change their votes before the session closes. No rushed decisions.

Learn more about how the voting system works on the Family Voting feature page.

Step 3

See the Results & Finalise the Plan

Once your family has voted, the Voting Results panel gives you a complete picture. The Meal Summary tab shows every dish with its score — thumbs up count minus thumbs down. The Voter Breakdown tab shows each family member's individual reactions.

Meals with low scores can be swapped out instantly. Once you are happy with the plan, close the voting session and move to the grocery list. The entire process — from AI generation to finalised plan — typically takes less than 10 minutes.

The grocery list is automatically generated from the finalised meals, organised by category, and ready to use in-store or for online ordering. Learn more about the automatic grocery list feature.

Why Family Meal Planning Actually Works with FamilyPlate

Most meal planning tools are built for one person. FamilyPlate is built for the whole household.

Everyone Has a Voice

The voting system is the core differentiator. When family members vote on meals before the week starts, they feel ownership over the plan. Complaints at the dinner table drop dramatically because everyone had a say. Research published in Appetite (van der Horst et al., 2014) confirms that children who are involved in meal decisions eat significantly more of the food and show greater willingness to try new dishes.

The AI Gets Smarter Every Week

Every vote, every swap, and every saved favourite teaches the AI about your family's preferences. After a few weeks, the AI generates plans that are already close to what your family wants — reducing the number of swaps needed and making the voting process faster. Learn more about how taste profiles work.

Zero Dietary Conflicts

Managing multiple dietary restrictions in one household is one of the hardest parts of family meal planning. FamilyPlate handles this automatically — every meal in the plan satisfies all active restrictions simultaneously. You set the rules once during onboarding; the AI enforces them on every plan, every week.

Reduced Mental Load

The mental load of deciding what to cook, checking what is in the fridge, and making sure everyone is happy falls on one person in most households. FamilyPlate distributes that load — the AI handles the planning, the family handles the voting, and the grocery list handles the shopping. The planner just approves and shops.

Balanced Meals, Not Just Popular Ones

Family meal planning is not just about convenience — it is about feeding your family well. A meta-analysis in Pediatrics (Hammons & Fiese, 2011) found that children in families who eat together 5 or more times per week are approximately 25% less likely to face nutritional health issues. FamilyPlate shows estimated calories and macros for every meal, so you can see at a glance that the week is nutritionally balanced.

Premium subscribers get a full weekly nutrition summary — average daily calories, protein, carbs, and fat — plus a 7-day calorie trend chart. You do not need to become a nutritionist; the app does the tracking for you. Explore the AI meal planner to see how nutrition data is integrated into every plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does family meal planning work with FamilyPlate?

FamilyPlate generates a complete weekly meal plan using AI — tailored to your family's dietary restrictions, cuisine preferences, and household size. Once the plan is ready, you share a voting link with your family. Each member votes thumbs up, neutral, or thumbs down on every meal. The planner sees the results in real time and can adjust before the week begins. Finally, all approved meals are converted into a single, organised grocery list.

Do family members need an account to vote on meals?

No. Family members vote through a simple shared link — no account, no app download, no password required. They just enter their name and start voting. This makes it easy for kids, grandparents, or anyone else in the household to participate from any device.

How many meals can the family vote on each week?

By default, FamilyPlate plans 7 dinners per week (one per day). Premium subscribers can also enable breakfast and lunch planning, giving the family up to 21 meals to vote on per week. The voting progress bar shows exactly how many meals have been reviewed, so no one loses track.

Can family members change their votes after submitting?

Yes. After completing their votes, family members see an "All Done!" confirmation screen with a "Review & Change Votes" button. They can return to any meal and update their reaction before the planner closes the voting session. This prevents rushed decisions and ensures the final plan truly reflects everyone's preferences.

How does the planner see the voting results?

The planner has access to a Voting Results panel that shows a Meal Summary and a Voter Breakdown. The Meal Summary lists every dish with its score (thumbs up minus thumbs down). The Voter Breakdown shows each family member's individual reactions. The planner can also share the voting link with additional family members directly from this panel.

Does FamilyPlate work for families with dietary restrictions?

Yes — this is one of the core design goals. The AI finds the intersection of all active dietary restrictions in the household. If one person is gluten-free and another is vegetarian, every suggested meal will satisfy both constraints simultaneously. Supported restrictions include gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, vegan, vegetarian, halal, kosher, low-carb, keto, and more.

What happens if a meal gets mostly negative votes?

You can swap any meal with one tap. The AI replaces it with a fresh alternative that still matches your dietary restrictions and cuisine preferences. Free users get 2 swaps per day. Premium users get unlimited swaps. Every swap also teaches the AI what your family prefers, so future plans get progressively better.

Is family meal planning free to use?

Yes. FamilyPlate has a free tier that includes AI-generated weekly meal plans, family voting for up to 3 voters, 2 meal swaps per day, and an automatic grocery list. The premium plan adds unlimited voters, unlimited swaps, breakfast and lunch planning, detailed nutrition tracking, and priority AI generation.
